Amid this fateful war and the brutal massacres being committed with
no regard for international and humanitarian laws and agreements, one might
ask: How can our divided, vulnerable country, plagued by chronic problems,
corrupt and humiliating conditions, and degraded morale—subjugated to foreign
influences and multiple occupations, most notably the Zionist occupation in
Palestine and the Turkish occupation in the north—how can such a nation, living
through daily destruction, bloodshed, tragedies, and suffering, confront a
brutal, arrogant enemy? How can it rise from its tragic reality and advance to
attain a respectable position among the nations?
In our view, there is no revival for our country and no hope for it
in the struggle for survival except through a comprehensive renaissance project
that resists occupation and foreign control over the nation’s resources and
decisions. This project aims to renew the nation’s life by awakening its
national consciousness, reinforcing its sovereignty, political and economic
independence, and spiritual integrity, and rebuilding society on solid
foundations through radical reforms to eliminate the factors of division,
backwardness, chaos, corruption, sectarian fanaticism, and narrow affiliations.
It seeks to instill the values of citizenship, democracy, social justice, and
national belonging.
Antun Saadeh, as a strategic visionary thinker, presented a
comprehensive renaissance project to elevate the nation, buried in the grave of
history, and to strengthen it with the elements of power needed to confront
colonial ambitions, primarily the Zionist settler project, which aspires to
dominate our entire homeland and its resources to fulfill its mythical dream.
This renaissance project launched by Saadeh, and for which he founded the
Syrian Social Nationalist Party, was summarized in the following text: "The
Syrian Social Nationalist Party aims to initiate a Syrian social-national
renaissance that guarantees the realization of its principles, restores the
vitality and strength of the Syrian nation, organizes a movement leading to the
full independence of the Syrian nation, strengthens its sovereignty, secures
its interests, improves its quality of life, and aspires to form an Arab
front."[1]
Saadeh’s vision stemmed from a clear, long-term perspective aimed
at achieving “a better life for his nation in a more beautiful world with
higher values.”[2] This humanitarian-civilizational vision, reflecting his grand
ambition and the noble aspirations of his people, did not aim only for the
revival of his nation but also aspired to reform and elevate human society. His
goal was not limited to improving the social, economic, and moral conditions of
the country and raising its standard of living for a better quality of life, but
it encompassed humanity as a whole and its happiness. He believed that global
issues such as destructive wars, devastating conflicts, economic and political
crises, poverty, unemployment, pollution, injustice, and the spread of
organized terrorism should be addressed by adopting "new social
perspectives" and high ethical values, establishing new systems that
contribute to human advancement and “building a happier and more sustainable
life.”[3] Hence, he said, "The Syrian Nationalist Movement did not only
bring Syria principles that revitalize life, but it also provided the world
with a foundation upon which civilization and cultural progress can
continue."[4]
