From Principle to Action: Saʿadeh and the Defense of Women’s Dignity- Part III

Edmond Melhem
This article forms part of a three-part series examining Antun Saʿadeh’s position on women’s dignity. It draws on the author’s book, Syrian Women: Their Struggle in Society and Their Empowerment through the Syrian Social Nationalist Party.

Saʿadeh’s opposition to women’s oppression did not remain confined to theory or literature. It found concrete expression in his actions, most notably in his intervention in the case of the renowned writer May Ziadeh. When Ziadeh was unjustly confined to a mental hospital—victimized by a patriarchal society intolerant of an independent woman’s intellect—Saʿadeh chose to intervene.

This intervention was neither symbolic nor risk-free. Defending May Ziadeh meant confronting powerful social norms and challenging a system that sought to silence women under the guise of protection. Saʿadeh’s visit and public support constituted an act of moral resistance against institutionalized injustice.

The case of May Ziadeh illustrates a broader pattern identified in Syrian Women: women in patriarchal societies often suffer layered forms of victimization. They are abused within the family, marginalized by law, and condemned by society when they resist. Mental illness, immorality, or dishonour are routinely invoked to discredit women who defy prescribed roles.

Saʿadeh refused to accept these narratives. His defense of Ziadeh affirmed a fundamental principle: a society that imprisons women for their independence, intellect, or refusal to conform has abdicated any claim to moral legitimacy. For Saʿadeh, the treatment of women was a measure of social integrity.

His legacy, therefore, extends beyond nationalism or political reform. It is an ethical legacy—one that insists that women’s dignity is inseparable from justice, and that no genuine social renaissance is possible while women remain subjected to fear, coercion, and silence.
