III Knowledge and Virtue – Toward the Formation of the New Individual

Edmond Melhem
If rational persuasion and inspiration constitute the method, then the ultimate aim of Sa’adeh’s discourse is the formation of a new individual—one firmly grounded in knowledge and guided by elevated values. Sa’adeh addresses students in the language of knowledge and inquiry, affirming that the student is, by nature, a seeker of truth. Education, in his view, is not a mere accumulation of information, but a disciplined process of discovering reality and cultivating a balanced and integrated personality.

This emphasis on knowledge was neither incidental nor secondary. Upon his return from forced exile, Sa’adeh expanded this intellectual endeavor through a series of structured lectures, in which he articulated the principles of the Social Nationalist doctrine with clarity and rigor, thereby consolidating the role of students as carriers of a coherent and conscious worldview.

In his address to the students of Damascus, he explicitly links the fate of the nation to the pursuit of truth, asserting that the passage from chaos to order—and from decline to progress—can only be realized through knowledge, awareness, and disciplined thought.

He further insists that the student’s mind must be active, analytical, and oriented toward apprehending reality as it truly is. For true national awareness arises from clarity of concepts and a steadfast reliance on reason.

Alongside this intellectual formation, Sa’adeh underscores the necessity of cultivating essential virtues: confidence, courage, integrity, duty, sincerity, and endurance. These are not abstract moral ideals, but foundational qualities required for the development of a personality capable of purposeful and effective action.

He also instills a spirit of optimism and faith in the future, urging students to strive for excellence and to discern between what he calls the “beautiful life”—rooted in strength, dignity, and moral integrity—and a lesser existence marked by weakness and confusion.

In his address to students at the American University of Beirut, Sa’adeh further emphasizes the indispensable role of spiritual and intellectual unity as a prerequisite for genuine national advancement.

Thus, his vision unfolds as a coherent and integrated whole: knowledge giving rise to awareness, awareness generating will, and will finding expression in action—guided throughout by a system of values that imparts direction and meaning to life.

This vision endures as a call not only to the students of his own time, but to every generation seeking to comprehend its role in shaping the future.
